EDWARD RUSH TURNER

 

Mayor 1882 – 1883.

 

An Independent with no party allegiance and later a member of the Conservative Party.

A member of the established church – Church of England.

Edward was first elected to the Town Council in 1858 as an Independent as one of the representatives of the Middle Ward. Edward a practical and technical man had been asked by the leading people of the St. Peter’s Dock area to be their champion at the Town Council over the state of the sewage disposal being virtually collected in St. Peter’s Dock and close by where the river Orwell joins the river Gipping, resulting in a somewhat unpleasant smell at low tide.

Born: 23rd December 1824, St. Mary at the Elms, Ipswich.

Baptised: 28th January 1825, at St. Mary at the Elms Church, Ipswich.
