A member of the Liberal Party.

A Nonconformist – Protestant Dissenter.

Samuel entered the Council in 1836 as one of the first Councillors for the Borough.

 

Born: 24th May 1801, St. Clement’s, Ipswich.

Baptised: Stoke Green Baptist Church, Ipswich.

Father: Abraham Kersey Cowell, born 1773, Mulbarton, Norfolk – died 19th March 1845, Church Street, Ipswich. A merchant in coal and a merchant in corn, and business in printing. Minister of Walton Baptist Chapel, Suffolk. A member of the Eastern Division committee of the British and Foreign Bible Society.

On the 22nd August 1812, Abraham, a merchant, in extensive business, and residing in Church Street, St. Clement’s, on the occasion of a vacancy on the Aldermanic Bench, was elected as a Liberal. His term of office extended to the 9th November 1947 – but he died, aged 70.

 

Mother: Deborah Cowell (nee Harrison), born 3rd August 1773, baptised 9th September 1773, Tackett Street Independent Church, Ipswich – daughter of Samuel & Mary Harrison. Deborah Cowell died 1st August 1822, Somer Town, Middlesex.

 

On the 14th June 1827, at St. James Church, Paddington, Middlesex, Abraham Kersey Cowell married Abigail Leach, born 1777, Pendleton Hall, Whalley, Ribble Valley, daughter of Catterall Leach & Elizabeth Leach (nee Briggs), of Pendleton Hall, Whalley, Ribble Valley, Lancashire, a Yeoman. Abigail Cowell died 1st December 1854, at 6, Bank Parade, Preston, Lancashire. Laid to rest at St. Mary & All Saint’s Churchyard, Whalley, Ribble Valley, Lancashire.

Charles Cowell, born 15th September 1798. A Corn and Coal Merchant. Charles married Marianne Byles, December 1801 – January 1874 – daughter of Nathaniel Byles Byles, a maltster and corn merchant and Marianne Byles (nee Byles), of Hill House, Ipswich.

 

Hannah Kersey Cowell, born 24th September 1799.

 

Eliza Cowell, born 19th March 1803. On the 16th April 1833, Walton, Suffolk, Eliza married William Warne Cantlow, 1802 – 1878, a Dissenting Minister – Baptist. Eliza died 1838, Walton, Suffolk.

 

George Kersey Cowell, 23rd December 1804. A Surgeon. On the 1st September 1835, Ipswich, George married Martha Conder, August 1810 – January 1900, daughter of George Notcutt & Martha Conder (nee Hitchcock). George died 13th April 1848, Ipswich.

 

Marianne Cowell, born 11th December 1809. On the 28th September 1829, Suffolk, Marianne married Henry Ridley, April 1805 – 1844, a Chemist of Fore Street, Ipswich. Marianne died 11th August 1887, Ipswich.

 

Sarah Cowell, born 20th November 1811 – died 1834, Ipswich. Burial service held 2nd December 1834, at Stoke Green Baptist Church, Ipswich.

 

Nephew – Edward Byles Cowell, born January 1826 – February 1903. Edward studied Sanskrit, Bengali and Hindustani. He was a noted translator of Persian poetry, and appointed as Professor of Sanskrit, at Cambridge University.

 

On the 23rd July 1822, at Norwich, Norfolk, Samuel married Emily Doggett, born 1800, Winfarthing, Norfolk, baptised 1st June 1800, Winfathing – daughter of Daniel & Arabella Doggett.

 

Father: Daniel Doggett, born 24th June 1765, Burston, Norfolk, a Farmer – died 27th December 1840, Winfathing. Buried 29th December 1840, at St, Mary’s Churchyard, Winfathing, Norfolk.

 

Mother: Arabell Doggett (nee Kemp (1st marriage Betts)), born 30th August 1764, Winfarthing, Norfolk – died 17th February 1849. Laid to rest at Winfarthing, Norfolk.

Emily Cowell died 1st December 1888, at Ipswich.
