E.A.D.T. – Friday, 22nd May 1914 – ATHLETIC SPORTS AT IPSWICH – On Thursday, 21st May, the Mayoress of Ipswich, Mrs. Dora Pipe, attended the fifth annual sports day of the Girls’ Municipal Secondary School, held at Sidegate Lane, Ipswich, in the presence of parents and friends of the pupils. The weather was ideal, the sun shining from a perfectly cloudless sky. The curious centipede race, with its zig-zagging movement, caused great amusement, as did the obstacle race, in which each competitor had to catch hold of a bun – dangling from a string – by the teeth and crawl under a netting, and then for home. During the afternoon Mr. Ganzoni entered the grounds with Mr. Clement Cobbold, and was accorded a hearty reception. The events of the afternoon included: – high jump, long jump, 100 yards race, hurdle race, quarter mile handicap, one-legged race, three-legged race, four-legged race, sack race, fishing race, centipede race, blindfolded race, flower basket race, obstacle race, dribbling hockey ball, slow bicycle race, house relay race, visitors’ race, and tug-of-war. At the conclusion, the Mayoress, Mrs. Dora Pipe presented the prizes to the girls.
E.A.D.T. – Monday, 10th August 1914 – IPSWICH MAYORESS’S GARMENT SCHEME – By invitation of the Head Mistress, Miss Emily Harrison, all mistresses, former and elder pupils, parents and other ladies interested in Mrs. Dora Pipe, the Mayoress of Ipswich’s Garment Making Scheme for the wounded are welcome to attend the Ipswich Municipal Secondary School for Girls, Bolton Lane, between 10 and 11 a.m., on Monday, 10th August 1914 to form a working party.
